I’m going to start this post with an apology. Our latest Twestival for Seattle’s YouthCare could not have been pulled off without the support and participation of many people. I will do my best to thank as many of those people as possible in this message, but I’m sure that I will miss a person or two (or a dozen). Please realize that even if your name isn’t mentioned, your contribution was valued and helped make this a truly successful event.
The fact that this second twestival event was to be dedicated to discovering and supporting a local nonprofit was a truly inspired idea. Our team devoted a lot of time and effort trying to select the perfect group. We reviewed so many excellent options (over 50), but none stood out quite like YouthCare. If clean water fuels the future in the developing world, Youth homelessness is the ultimate blight on Seattle’s (and America’s) future. Although there’s a belief that folks in Seattle love pets and hate kids. We found nearly universal praise for YouthCare, and great interest in seeing how we could best provide for them via Twestival. We are especially joyful that YouthCare’s staff was receptive to what we were trying to do, and that they took an active role in the event. Sally Chong’s advocacy and executive director, Melinda Giovengo’s curiosity about what could be achieved via social media and Twestival, helped to keep the event running smoothly. Plus Melinda’s great speech about the problem of youth homelessness brought the issue to life. I noticed more than one weepy eye as she spoke.
If selecting our cause was a joy, selecting the venue was less so. We looked at a multitude of options from bars/restaurants to museums, baseball stadiums and event halls. In the end the Spitfire Grill came through at our time of need. Although I’m not sure that college football and social media charity events are a match made in heaven, we are appreciative that Spitfire Grill Seattle supported our gathering.
We are also very appreciative of the companies who supported the Twestival for YouthCare via their generous donations. Spring Creek Group, Visible Technologies, Razorfish all stepped up to the plate with cash donations and behind the scenes support. While other great local companies provided raffle and promotional items which helped raise hundreds of additional dollars for our cause. Hotel Max, Alaska Airlines, Social Media Club Seattle, Seattle Chiropractic , GameHouse/RealNetworks, BlueMoon Burgers, Quadrant Homes/The Space Needle & Starbucks all contributed in ways large and small.
This event could not have been pulled off without the people who generously donated their time to the effort. Our volunteer team researched nonprofits, knocked on doors for gifts, printed tickets, scouted venues and answered questions. Most of all they were a big help. I’d especially like to thank Mike Foley, Shauna Causey and Karianne Stinson for working tirelessly on all aspects of the event, but this was a true team effort. I thank you one and all.
Thanks so very much,
Doug Winfield
