What’s the most important thing to say after a Twestival?

Posted on: October 1 2009 at 5:42 pm - Comment

I’m going to start this post with an apology. Our latest Twestival for Seattle’s YouthCare could not have been pulled off without the support and participation of many people. I will do my best to thank as many of those people as possible in this message, but I’m sure that I will miss a person or two (or a dozen). Please realize that even if your name isn’t mentioned, your contribution was valued and helped make this a truly successful event.

The fact that this second twestival event was to be dedicated to discovering and supporting a local nonprofit was a truly inspired idea. Our team devoted a lot of time and effort trying to select the perfect group. We reviewed so many excellent options (over 50), but none stood out quite like YouthCare. If clean water fuels the future in the developing world, Youth homelessness is the ultimate blight on Seattle’s (and America’s) future. Although there’s a belief that folks in Seattle love pets and hate kids. We found nearly universal praise for YouthCare, and great interest in seeing how we could best provide for them via Twestival. We are especially joyful that YouthCare’s staff was receptive to what we were trying to do, and that they took an active role in the event. Sally Chong’s advocacy and executive director, Melinda Giovengo’s curiosity about what could be achieved via social media and Twestival, helped to keep the event running smoothly. Plus Melinda’s great speech about the problem of youth homelessness brought the issue to life. I noticed more than one weepy eye as she spoke.

If selecting our cause was a joy, selecting the venue was less so. We looked at a multitude of options from bars/restaurants to museums, baseball stadiums and event halls. In the end the Spitfire Grill came through at our time of need. Although I’m not sure that college football and social media charity events are a match made in heaven, we are appreciative that Spitfire Grill Seattle supported our gathering.

We are also very appreciative of the companies who supported the Twestival for YouthCare via their generous donations. Spring Creek Group, Visible Technologies, Razorfish all stepped up to the plate with cash donations and behind the scenes support. While other great local companies provided raffle and promotional items which helped raise hundreds of additional dollars for our cause. Hotel Max, Alaska Airlines, Social Media Club Seattle, Seattle Chiropractic , GameHouse/RealNetworks, BlueMoon Burgers, Quadrant Homes/The Space Needle & Starbucks all contributed in ways large and small.

This event could not have been pulled off without the people who generously donated their time to the effort. Our volunteer team researched nonprofits, knocked on doors for gifts, printed tickets, scouted venues and answered questions. Most of all they were a big help. I’d especially like to thank Mike Foley, Shauna Causey and Karianne Stinson for working tirelessly on all aspects of the event, but this was a true team effort. I thank you one and all.

Thanks so very much,

Doug Winfield

$6,456 Raised for YouthCare, Thanks to You

Posted on: September 15 2009 at 11:56 am - Comment

As of today, we have raised $6,456 for YouthCare. This is approximately $3,000 more than we collected during the Twestival charity:water event in February. This figure is the result of the generosity and hard work of our attendees, sponsors, volunteers and those of you who helped spread the Twestival Seattle conversation.

At this point we don’t know how this amount stacks up against the revenue of the other Twestival Local cities, but Seattle should be proud that we have been able to make such a great impact. Hopefully this will help set the stage for other charitable campaigns, and help prove the transformational value of social media to fund and raise awareness of good works happening in our neighborhoods, regions, nation and the world.

We will be submitting this figure to Twestival HQ today, but will update the site if we have additional news about donations or other significant information.

Hotel Max Seattle is the Most Artistic Downtown Seattle, Washington Hotel, and Most Generous Also.

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Flash video.

Due to an oversight we failed to give Hotel Max the recognition it deserved in supporting the Seattle Twestival for YouthCare. Hotel Max provided a terrific prize of a two-night stay at their truly unique setting. The Hotel Max raises both philanthropy and the hotel business to works of art.
Twestival Seattle thanks them and offers apologies for our mistake.

In the heart of downtown Seattle, Washington, the Hotel Max offers an artistic setting for both business and pleasure. The Hotel Max Seattle provides the platform for both emerging and established Seattle artists and photographers. There are more than 350 original paintings and photographs found throughout our Seattle, Washington hotel in the lobby, guest rooms and corridors. Don’t forget about the bountiful Seattle attractions within walking distance of the hotel, or the great Seattle shopping available.

Guess Who’s on Twitter … It’s @YouthCareSEA!

Posted on: September 9 2009 at 4:59 pm - Comment

Twestival Seattle volunteer Jeanna Barrett (@jeannabarrett) got together with the good folks at YouthCare and help them devise a customized social media strategy and set up a Twitter account just in time for Saturday’s Twestival.

Twestival Seattle has chosen YouthCare as the beneficiary of the Twestival Local event coming up on Sept. 12, 2009.

Jeanna met with them, showed them a quick PowerPoint presentation on Twitter she had written for a class about social media for marketing coordinators while she worked at Colliers International. The presentation covered the very basics of what Twitter is and how it works. Then, she walked them through all the features of the site, such as how to follow someone, how to direct message someone, how to pay attention and respond to @ replies.

Later, Jeanna helped YouthCare folks search for some of their partners, competitors, what people were saying about Youthcare. She explained the terminology (DM, RT, @, etc.) and how to negotiate tools such as TweetDeck, Hootsuite and hashtags.

Jeanna also talked about how Twitter is a conversation — a dialogue rather than a monologue — and that it’s not good to always send out marketing tweets about Youthcare, but to provide value for followers.

Now, their Twitter account is set up. Their logo is uploaded as the avatar, the colors have been changed to match the YouthCare colors, until they get a fancier background up, if they choose. Their 160-character bio will come shortly.

So, take a moment and visit http://twitter.com/YouthCareSEA. Follow them and leave them a nice @ reply.

Win One Laptop Per (your inner) Child

Posted on: September 8 2009 at 1:54 pm - Comment

An unnamed YouthCare Twestival supporter has donated an Asus EEE PC Netbook ($329 value) to help drive donations to our event this Saturday. Each ticket vauled at $25 or more (or any ticket purchased before 2:00PM PDT on 9/8/09) gives you a chance to win this lovely, petite example of computer miniaturization.

The larger your ticket donation to the YouthCare Twestival, the more chances you have to win the netbook. This process gives every ticket holder a chance to win the gift, while providing an incentive to be more “giving” towards the cause.

The drawing will be held at the YouthCare Twestival on September 12th, 2009. You don’t have to be at the event to win, but we encourage every YouthCare supporter to attend.

Do you have your ticket yet?

Twestival Local is Saturday and we need your help. If you haven’t bought a ticket yet, stop what you’re doing and buy one right now for yourself (and an extra one for a friend). You can still take advantage of the VISIBLETECH promo code to have Visible Technologies spring for $5 of your ticket.

Tweet it out!

Phew! Now that your ticket purchase is taken care of, send a tweet to tell your friends about Twestival. We’ll even take the guesswork out of what to tweet. Just tweet out a few of these messages to your following:

  • Looking forward to Seattle Twestival on Saturday. Event will raise money/awareness for YouthCare. http://bit.ly/r2z7o #twtsea
  • Nearly 30% of homeless LGBTQ youth attempted suicide within last year. http://bit.ly/Dorqv #twtsea

  • Looking for a big way to help YouthCare through Twestival Seattle. Try a sponsorship: http://bit.ly/2Kaf6 #twtsea
  • Current funding covers staffing for only 8 beds, which means that 4 beds go unfilled every night. http://bit.ly/2Kaf6 #twtsea
  • In King County, over 1,000 homeless youth are on the streets with no safe shelter or place to stay. http://bit.ly/2Kaf6 #twtsea

Blog all about it!

If you have a blog, please write a post to help bring awareness about teen homelessness and how YouthCare is helping. Or blog about how Twestival is bringing social media enthusiasts together for the good of the community. Don’t forget to check out the YouthCare website for info about how since 1974 the organization has been fulfilling its mission statement — to build confidence and promote self sufficiency for homeless and underserved youth by providing shelter, hope and support.

Post a Video on our 12Seconds Channel

Posted on: September 3 2009 at 2:21 pm - Comment

//12seconds.tv/channel/YouthCareTwestival

Check out our 12Seconds channel at http://12seconds.tv/channel/YouthCareTwestival

We really appreciate all the tweet support and publicity you’re all giving us. Seriously, we’re really feeling the love!

But, for those of you who want to do more, we’ve set up an account on 12Seconds.tv — a service that allows users to create (you guessed it) 12-second videos. Think of it as the Twitter version of YouTube.

Whether you’re at your computer with a webcam, or out and about with your cell phone or Flip mino, you can make a quick video and post it to our channel by sending it in an e-mail to 12+936919@12seconds.tv. The video will automatically post to our channel and it will automatically be tweeted out by our @TwestivalSEA account.

Can’t think of anything to say? Here are some suggestions:

  • State a factoid about YouthCare or homelessness in King County
  • Talk about what you’d like to see/do at Twestival Seattle on 9/12
  • Leave a message for YouthCare
  • Thank a Twestival Seattle volunteer or our lead organizer Doug
  • Or just leave a simple message saying, “My name is X and I support YouthCare and Twestival”

Don’t be afraid, give it a try.
